Korea is going to focus on console game development for the next four years as part of a new strategy to revitalize their gaming industry. The country is hoping to focus less on mobile titles and online games, especially after releasing a number of recent console hits.

Yonhap News Agency (via GamesIndustry.biz) reported that the country has plans to grow their console market by 2028 by releasing games for these systems. Apparently, Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism will help local developers bring their games to Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft’s current line of systems.

Gamers in Korea spent 22.2 trillion won on mobile and online titles, resulting in the company’s share in the console market only being 1.5%. Despite the recent popularity of PC games, many gamers still play on consoles and Korea is hoping to get part of that market in four years.

At the time of writing, we have seen some great Korean developed games make their way to consoles and PC to success. Stellar Blade is an obvious example of this, as the sexy spectacle fighter has been a major talking point for being a quality PS5 exclusive. Lies of P was another major hit for the country, giving fans a quality soulslike experience that’s still being enjoyed to this day.

Korea will still play a huge part in PC and mobile titles, as they’re games make up 55% of East Asia’s revenue. That success won’t be stopping anytime soon, as titles like Goddess of Victory: Nikke continue to have a big presence in mobile markets. Despite this, the country wanting to do well in gaming systems that are less predatory should be commended, since they could have coasted on mobile and PC titles.

Games like Stellar Blade show that Korea can definitely have a major place in console gaming. Even with a focus on sex appeal, the game was able to win over fans with its combat. While the racist art was unfortunate, it has since been patched out and players can enjoy the game without any issue.
