Though he lacks fancy weapons and flashy energy blasts, the Guardians of the Galaxy’s resident tree is no slouch in battle. In spite of his limited vocabulary, this Marvel Rivals Groot guide will help you send the message that the flora colossus is not to be messed with in a fight.

Known to be extremely resilient, Groot is the perfect candidate to protect his teammates in a fight. The Marvel Rivals characters roster is full of godlike beings and Omega-level mutants, so someone’s got to be in charge of keeping the team alive. If you’re looking to get an early firsthand impression of how Groot plays before the full Marvel Rivals release date, feel free to take a look at our guide on how to get a Marvel Rivals alpha code.

Marvel Rivals Groot Abilities

Groot's abilities in Marvel Rivals are as follows:

  • Vine Strike (Left Click) – Vines come out of Groot’s arms to strike enemies from a distance.
  • Spore Bomb (Right Click) – Lob a Spore Bomb that deals damage and splits into smaller spores on impact.
  • Strangling Prison (Q) – Groot creates a cluster of vines that pulls enemies to its center while dealing damage.
  • Ironwood Wall (E) – Put up an Ironwood Wall at the target location. After being Awakened, Groot will gain Bonus Health when enemies near the wall take damage.
  • Thornlash Wall (L SHIFT) – Create a wall at the target location that attacks nearby enemies when Awakened.
  • Flora Colossus (Passive) – Wooden walls will Awaken when Groot is near, giving them additional effects.
  • Friendly Shoulder (Passive) – a Team-up ability that allows Rocket Raccoon to ride on Groot’s shoulder and provide damage reduction.
  • Health – 900
  • Class – Vanguard (Tank)

With these abilities at his disposal, Groot excels at creating space for his allies in Marvel Rivals. This is great for dictating the pace of every encounter with the enemy team. It helps that, with 900 health, Groot is incredibly hard to kill, even by the likes of the DPS queen Scarlet Witch.

How to Play Groot in Marvel Rivals

With his hefty health bar and crowd control capabilities, Groot should always be taking charge on the frontlines. The Guardian of the Galaxy can then use his wall abilities to isolate targets and pick the enemy off one by one.

Don’t forget that your walls can help by giving you added health and providing some extra damage. All you need to do is remember to stay close enough to them to stay Awakened. What I recommend you do is trap enemies by placing walls behind them to block their retreat before charging in and showing them what for, with both your standard abilities and your walls dealing damage.

Strangling Prison is great for dealing with multiple enemies at once as it can lock groups in place, making them easy targets for your teammates. You can also throw out a Spore Bomb to maximize the damage from its scatter effect.

Marvel Rivals Groot Costumes and Skins

Groot currently has two skins in Marvel Rivals. More are bound to come after the game’s official release, but here are Groot’s costumes so far:

  • Classic Groot
  • Abies Azure

Groot is a sentient alien tree, so you can’t really go wrong with his design. His default costume has light brown bark with some mushrooms growing on his ankles and wrists. Exposed parts of his body like his eyes show a glowing green substance while small leaves look like they are about to sprout on his elbows, shoulders, and head.

The Abies Azure costume doesn’t change anything from the default Groot appearance except for its color. With this skin, Groot has gray bark with a blue substance in his exposed areas, making the mushrooms on his body stand out more.

And that’s everything you need to know to play Marvel Rivals' Groot like a pro. For more on the superhero team shooter, take a look at our guides for other characters like Magneto and Luna Snow.
